통곡의벽

(Wailing Wall)

AD 70년 로마의 티투스 將軍과 로마軍에 의해 破壞된 예루살렘 제 2 聖殿 가운데 現存하는 唯一한 遺跡地이다. 이 戰爭에서 예루살렘 聖殿 을 破壞한 後 로마인들이 유대 地域에서 유대인들을 몰아내었기 때문에 이 때부터 유대인들은 터전을 잃고 全 世界에 흩어져 살게 되었다. 터전을 잃은 유대인들이 남아 있는 聖殿의 西쪽 壁에 모여 痛哭을 했기 때문에 '痛哭의 壁'이라는 이름이 붙었다. '하느님의 임재는 痛哭의 壁을 떠나지 않는다'는 랍비들의 神仰에 根據를 두고 있다.
